For our second participation in Abu Dhabi Art, we are delighted to present a curated group show, within the Focus section by Myrna Ayad, featuring the work of three pioneering historical modernist women artists: Inji Efflatoun (Egypt, 1924 1989), Chaïbia Talal (Morocco, 1929-2004) and Amal Abdenour (Palestine, 1931-2020). Concurrently, we are pleased to present new artwork by three contemporary artists: Zoulikha Bouabdellah (born in Moscow, 1977), Farah Khelil (born in Carthage, 1980) and Camille Pradon (born in Oullins, 1993).
These artists work across diverse media and practices, including oil painting, work on paper, photography, and installation, reflecting their unique cultural contexts and time periods valuing diverse intentions and styles. The modern artists featured embraced "artistic pluralism" in the mid-20th century, drawing from expressionism, art brut and copy art to address social, environmental, and political issues. Through works exploring forms of creative resistance in contexts of social injustice, gender bias, and labor issues, these pioneering women continue to inspire new generations to address both real-world concerns and ontological questions through their innovative practices and approaches.
The contemporary artists featured embody the evolving landscape of contemporary art, exploring the complexity of concepts and materials to question traditional definitions and boundaries of art. Their work creates a dialogue with preceding styles and movements, contributing to a broader understanding of art's role and impact in a global context.
